When disposing of old PC's and hard drives, you need to be sure to remove any private, personal or business information first. Unfortunately, formatting a hard drive (even an "Unconditional" format) can still leave information on a hard drive that could be recovered.
An alternative to reformatting your hard drive is to purchase a commercial wiping or erasing utility that will overwrite your hard drive with meaningless data.
Surprisingly, the best non-destructive solution for data erasure is FREE! The Secure Erase utility (HDDerase.exe) provided by the The Center for Magnetic Recording Research (CMMR) is a free DOS-based utility that securely erases ("sanitizes") all data on ATA hard disk drives in Intel architecture computers (PCs). The utility uses the internal secure erase command available on most disk drives, which is fast and secure. The CMRR Secure Erase utility offers up to six choices of erasure methods, including DoD 5220 and fast in-drive erase.
Secure Erase has been approved by the U.S. National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), Computer Security Resource Center, and rates Secure Erase at a higher security level than external software utilities such as Norton Government Wipe. Secure Erase also meets the legal requirements of HIPAA, PIPEDA, GLBA, and Sarbanes-Oxley.
